EU carbon trading price exceeds €100 per ton for the first time

  • 2023-03-01

The EU ETS price hit a record high of €101 per ton on February 21st. The EU ETS price has increased fivefold over the past three years.

With the EU Parliament's preliminary approval of stricter carbon trading regulations, the market anticipates that as the total quota decreases, the supply of free allowances will also decrease, driving a long-term bullish outlook for the carbon trading market. Regarding the rise in carbon trading prices, Vertis Environmental Finance suggests that this may be due to below-average temperatures expected in Northern Europe over the coming weeks, prompting power companies to manage their risks.

On the other hand, while some analysts believe that the €100 carbon trading threshold will stimulate investment in emerging clean technologies such as carbon capture and hydrogen energy, some industry representatives, such as the president of the European Paper Industry Association and the European Steel Association, have warned that continued escalation in carbon trading prices will impact industry competitiveness. In response, the European Parliament has stated that it will ensure that a portion of funds raised from carbon trading quotas are used to develop clean technologies and help accelerate industry decarbonization.
