The essence of design lies in the understanding of materials. Materials play a vital role in human life. From clothing made of polyester fibers to building facades constructed of steel bars, cement, or bricks, to disposable plastic bags and tableware, the creation of all objects is closely related to materials. From a practical design perspective, designers and product developers who actively and personally experience and understand objects and materials during the conceptual design phase can achieve unexpected results. Materials are like language; the more design vocabulary one possesses, the more solutions one can observe and express. In today's world of constantly emerging new materials and technologies, the appropriate use of materials and the concept of ecological sustainability have become crucial. Users (consumers) not only ask whether companies have implemented sustainable and green design, but also what green products they offer and how they are environmentally friendly. This has become a global trend towards sustainability! Taiwan's material technology is internationally competitive. How can designers and product developers, in the early stages of product development, explore unmet potential needs of users (consumers) by deeply engaging with these high-quality, domestically produced materials? In light of this, the Plastics Center Foundation innovatively established the \"Sustainable Materials Library\" in 2020. This initiative aims to meet the needs of a broad user base (consumers) by systematically collecting various sustainable materials. The goal is to create a platform for communication between design demanders and material suppliers, based on the principles of sustainable design. Introduction to the Sustainable Materials Library: The \"Sustainable Materials Library\" (SML) officially launched in December 2020. It collects, organizes, and introduces various sustainable materials. Within four years, it will collect nearly 2,000 materials with sustainability, environmental friendliness, and recyclability value. Categories include: plastics, rubber, fibers, metals, minerals, natural materials, and others (including adhesives, coatings, additives, etc.) in semi-processed and secondary-processed finished and semi-finished products. This allows designers and product developers to truly see, touch, and experience the characteristics of each material. \"Sustainable materials\" are broadly defined as materials that minimize the impact on the Earth's environment and human health throughout the entire product lifecycle, from raw material acquisition and manufacturing to usage and post-use recycling. Their characteristics include low levels of hazardous substances (e.g., heavy metals, plasticizers, pollutant emissions), energy efficiency (low carbon footprint, low material consumption, lightweight, volume reduction, use of natural renewable resources, water conservation, durability), and recyclability (e.g., use of recycled materials, material uniformity, easy disassembly, recycling systems, biodegradability). The goal is to identify the most suitable material applications from a product lifecycle perspective. The \"Sustainable Materials Library\" also regularly organizes workshops, exchange activities, and visits on circular materials thinking, fostering new ideas and sustainable development across various fields through professional skills training and a series of seminars and exchanges. In addition, the technology sector will introduce experts and leading companies to present and showcase sustainable materials, catering to specific learning needs and industries. This will create opportunities for manufacturers to find clients and designers to find materials, facilitating supply and demand matching. Small-batch trial production services will be provided for developers with specific material applications, ensuring stable control and quality of sustainable materials. This aims to cultivate the ability of SMEs to utilize circular resources and enhance the value and stability of circular economy products. The goal is to provide more resources for demanders (product developers) and explore more application possibilities for suppliers (manufacturers), ensuring a continuous flow of creativity and enabling designs to truly come to fruition.
