The SPI is a product evaluation form that Target requires suppliers to complete before purchasing products, which includes four key requirements: safe raw materials, transparency of product composition, sustainable packaging materials, and good product management. Based on a product's performance rating across the four key areas mentioned above, higher scores will influence whether the product can be sold in Target stores. Higher-scoring products will also receive better purchasing terms from Target's procurement department. Since 2016, Target SPI has expanded its standards to include household cleaning products, personal care products and cosmetics, and baby care products. Future plans include incorporating more product categories for sustainability assessment to address growing consumer demands for sustainability and environmental protection. To achieve its 2020 goals and effectively manage the content of harmful chemicals in its private label products, Target has partnered with UL, a third-party certification body, to strengthen the importance of transparent product ingredient disclosure.
