Information Disclosure Regarding UN SDGs by Companies Across Greater China This September marks the second anniversary of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). This article reviews the newly released Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports for 2016 to understand how companies in Greater China are disclosing their SDG commitments. Among the 50 largest listed companies in mainland China and Hong Kong, only one-fifth listed SDG-related commitments in their 2016 CSR reports. In Taiwan, more than half of the 50 largest listed companies listed such commitments. However, the quality of information disclosure regarding SDG alignment strategies varies. Some CSR reports including SDG commitments lack open and transparent discussion, while others focus on the potential positive and negative impacts of corporate operations on SDGs and clearly translate SDG commitments into measurable and time-bound targets. Among companies operating in the Greater China region, some are adopting a more strategic approach, identifying SDGs relevant to their operations and expanding their impact by aligning their contributions with business priorities: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) \u2013 To make a substantial contribution to the seven specific SDGs, TSMC reviewed its internal practices related to these SDGs, understood the impact of TSMC's operations on the SDGs, and unveiled its \"TSMC 2020 Vision,\" setting measurable and time-sensitive targets. For example, to make a substantial contribution to SDG 12, \"Responsible Consumption and Production,\" TSMC aims for a waste recycling rate greater than 95% and a landfill rate of less than 1%. Far Eastern New Century (FENC) \u2013 Far Eastern New Century is committed to enhancing its core competitiveness and assisting in the achievement of the SDGs through product and process innovation. For example, to make a substantial contribution to SDG Item 6, \"Clean Water and Sanitation,\" Far Eastern New Century collaborated with Nike and the Dutch company DyeCoo to install Taiwan's first and the world's second dyeing machine at its Taoyuan plant, capable of using carbon dioxide instead of water. To make a substantial contribution to SDG Item 14, \"Life Below Water,\" Far Eastern New Century recycles and reprocesses ocean waste PET bottles, assisting Adidas in manufacturing sneakers and soccer jerseys. AsusTek, as a world-leading information technology company, recognizes that the rapid pace of innovation in consumer electronics and the high frequency of user replacements result in a large amount of electronic waste globally, posing a significant threat to human health and the environment.
