In fact, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during their growth process, and when the trees die, this absorbed carbon dioxide is \"returned.\" Due to extensive deforestation and forest fires, up to 20% of the Amazon rainforest has begun to return the carbon absorbed during its growth, causing the rainforest to become a major carbon emitter. Over the past decade, a team led by Professor Luciana Gatti from the Brazilian Space Research Agency (INPE) has been measuring greenhouse gas emissions in different sections of the Amazon rainforest every two weeks using spacecraft equipped with sensors. They discovered that while the rainforest still possesses the capacity to absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide, one area, drastically reduced by deforestation, has lost this crucial ability. This yet-to-be-released report reveals that the southeastern section of the Amazon rainforest is not only unable to absorb carbon but has become a source of carbon emissions. Generally, rainforests absorb carbon dioxide more effectively in wetter years, but this area emits carbon regardless of whether it's wet or dry. Analysis indicates this result is worrying, suggesting that the rainforest, originally a key player in carbon storage, may be gradually transforming into a carbon emitter.
