On May 20, 2022, the European Commission published an initiative on its official website regarding substances restricted under the RoHS Directive. The proposal would add tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) to the RoHS restricted substances list\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The adoption of this plan is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022. <\/strong>The final control requirements will be based on the final decision of the European Commission. SGS recommends that all companies continue to pay attention to our newsletter and formulate corresponding control strategies in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two new substances proposed for control<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2021, the EU RoHS Assessment Agency released the final assessment report for RoHS Investigation Project Pack 15, recommending that medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) be added to the control list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    About Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) (including linear or branched chlorinated paraffins with carbon chain lengths of C14-C17)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Toxicity<\/strong>: Including reproductive toxicity and aquatic toxicity. MCCPs are considered to meet the PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic) and vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative) characteristics of REACH regulations and were added to the SVHC candidate list in July 2021.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Function<\/strong>: Similar to SCCPs, these are flame-retardant plasticizers. They are commonly found in PVC, soft plastics, rubber materials, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and especially wire and cable. Alternatives to MCCPs, which are used as plasticizers and flame retardants, are already available on the market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Environmental hazards<\/strong>: The disposal of discarded electrical and electronic products and the recycling of PVC materials pose unacceptable risks to human health and the environment. MCCPs in soil and water sediments can enter the food chain and cause secondary poisoning in organisms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
