From May 1, 2009, the European Union will ban the sale of consumer products containing dimethyl fumarate (DMF). Products already on the market that contain DMF must be withdrawn, and those already sold to consumers must also be recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
European Commission Decision 2009\/251\/EC stated that the presence of DMF (dimethylformamide) in furniture and footwear sold in several EU Member States was a major cause of harm to consumer health. According to clinical trials, DMF is a biocide that prevents leather products from developing mold in humid climates. DMF is typically contained in small pouches inside furniture or added to shoe boxes. While it can evaporate and permeate into the product to prevent mold growth, it can also penetrate clothing and reach the consumer's skin, causing contact dermatitis, itching, irritation, redness, and burns. In some cases, it can even lead to breathing difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
European Commission Decision 2009\/251\/EC applies to all consumer products, and products that, even if not intended for consumer use, may still be used by consumers. According to the decision, from 1 May 2009, products containing DMF were prohibited from being placed on the market. Member States were required to ensure that products containing DMF had been withdrawn from the market and from consumers, and to ensure that consumers were fully aware of the dangers of such products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Products containing DMF are defined as products or product components that contain DMF (e.g., packaged in one or more small bags), or products or product components with a DMF concentration exceeding 0.1 mg\/kg by weight. European Commission Decision 2009\/251\/EC will be in effect until 15 March 2010. If no better solution is found during this period, the Commission will consider extending its implementation for another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
