The United States submitted the "Electrical Equipment Environmental Protection Design Act" (HR 2420) NO.19\/2009<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the regulation of hazardous substances in electrical equipment, U.S. Representative Michael Burgess introduced H.R. 2420, the Environmental Design of Electrical Equipment Act (EDEE), to the House Energy and Commerce Committee on May 14, 2009, as a bill to amend the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 (TSCA). The bill is currently awaiting review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limits required<\/strong>
H.R. 2420 are the same as those in the EU RoHS. From July 1, 2010, the content of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in homogeneous materials used in electrical products sold in the US market shall not exceed 0.1% by weight, and the cadmium content shall not exceed 0.01%; except for those exempted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exclusionary Programs<\/strong> H.R. 2420 lists numerous exclusionary programs, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/td>Products and equipment with voltage greater than 300 volts<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Products used on fixed equipment (excluding lighting equipment)<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Communication systems, including medical communication and emergency call systems.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Transportation Management and Control System<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Parallel capacitors and series capacitors<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Medical diagnostic imaging and treatment equipment<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Lead is present in steel alloys up to 0.35% by weight, in aluminum alloys up to 0.4% by weight, and in copper alloys up to 4% by weight.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
