The requirements in the draft standard would significantly reduce the power consumption of televisions compared to those currently purchased by consumers.

This draft energy efficiency standard for televisions requires dealers to reduce the energy consumption of televisions sold since 2011 by 33%. From 2013 onwards, even stricter energy consumption requirements will apply. Once implemented, this measure is expected to save California approximately $8.1 billion in electricity costs.

However, the Consumer Electrical Appliances Association did not support the release of this draft, arguing that consumers should decide on energy-saving development, rather than relying on regulations. Prior to televisions, the California Energy Commission had already established energy consumption standards for refrigerators, regulating their energy requirements.

The California Energy Commission website has also published a frequently asked question (FAQ) answering consumer inquiries regarding this draft energy efficiency standard for televisions.
