Japan has released a new version of the GHS standard (JIS Z 7253). This standard integrates two existing standards: GHS Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) (Z 7250) and GHS Labelling Regulations (Z 7251). The new standard is revised in accordance with the content of the fourth edition of the United Nations Purple Book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
GHS stands for Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. The United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (UNCETDG\/GHS) developed the GHS system in December 2002. In July 2003, the United Nations Economic and Social Council officially adopted the GHS and authorized its translation into official UN languages \u200b\u200bfor worldwide use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main revisions are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
* The term \"MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet\" will be shortened to \"SDS Safety Data Sheet\" for use in labeling and SDS writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
* The new standard requires companies to fulfill their obligations by December 31, 2016 at the latest. After this transition period ends, the Z 7250 and Z 7251 standards will no longer be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
* The public consultation on the new standard ended on February 28, 2012, and the new standard will take effect on April 1, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
