To regulate the safety requirements of jewelry products in the Chinese domestic market, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China and the Standardization Administration of China officially promulgated the mandatory standard GB 28480-2012, \"Regulations on Limits of Hazardous Substances in Jewelry,\" on June 29, 2012. This standard officially came into effect on May 1, 2013. The implementation of this standard provides a clear basis for the production, sale, and government supervision of jewelry products in the Chinese domestic market. This standard mainly applies to jewelry made of various materials other than precious stones and jade, including children's jewelry (jewelry worn by children aged 14 and under), limiting the amount of hazardous substances in them, and setting different requirements for the restricted items and limits for adult and children's jewelry. After the standard's implementation, a one-year transition period was given to the total content requirements of arsenic, mercury, hexavalent chromium, lead, and cadmium in non-precious metal jewelry and accessories in the market. If the jewelry has a plating, the nickel release from the plating in areas in prolonged contact with the skin must be less than 0.5 \u03bcg\/cm\u00b2\/week during normal use. If used for ear or other body piercings, the nickel release must be less than 0.2 \u03bcg\/cm\u00b2\/week during wound healing. The maximum limits for total hazardous substances in jewelry are as follows: \u2013 Arsenic: 1,000 mg\/kg, \u2013 Hexavalent chromium: 1,000 mg\/kg, \u2013 Mercury: 1,000 mg\/kg, \u2013 Lead: 1,000 mg\/kg, \u2013 Cadmium: 100 mg\/kg. The maximum leaching limits for hazardous substances in children's jewelry are as follows: \u2013 Antimony: 60 mg\/kg, \u2013 Arsenic: 25 mg\/kg, \u2013 Barium: 1,000 mg\/kg, \u2013 Cadmium: 75 mg\/kg, \u2013 Chromium: 60 mg\/kg, \u2013 Lead: 90 mg\/kg, \u2013 Mercury: 60 mg\/kg, \u2013 Selenium: 500 mg\/kg.
