The European Commission publishes requirements for hazardous substances in its environmental labeling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Commission recently published environmental labeling requirements for processed paper products, with the majority of the standards focusing on hazardous substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \"processed paper products\" includes envelopes, shopping bags, and stationery, but excludes products categorized as printed paper products and packaging paper products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To apply for the EU's eco-label, commonly known as the \"little flower\" \u2013 for processed paper products \u2013 manufacturers must, where technically feasible, limit or eliminate the use of certain harmful substances during the processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly released environmental label requirements, in addition to specifying hazardous substances already regulated by EU regulations, also specify the conditions of use for the following particular chemical substances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) or other derivatives of alkylphenols;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 The surfactants used in deinking must be biodegradable;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Certain biodegradable agents<\/p>\n\n\n\n
