Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, stated, \"Plastic waste is undoubtedly a major issue, and Europeans need to work together to solve it.\" Timmermans added, \"Today's proposal will reduce the amount of disposable plastic products on our supermarket shelves through a series of measures.\" The proposal calls for a ban on plastic cotton swabs, cutlery, bowls, plates, straws, beverage stirrers, and balloon sticks, but does not set a deadline for implementation. According to the proposal, all of these products must be made from sustainable materials. The proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and all 28 EU member states.
