The UK National Metrology Laboratory publishes its annual RoHS compliance report.<\/strong><\/td>NO.14\/2009<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The National Laboratory for Metrology (NWML) published its 2008 RoHS Implementation Annual Report on 31 March 2009. This report reviews NWML's activities in implementing the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) commissioned by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the RoHS Directive came into effect on July 1, 2006, related disputes still exist for manufacturers in the UK:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/td>Scope of the directive: The scope of regulation can currently only be clarified from the WEEE directives or the Executive Committee's FAQs.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>European Consistency: Industry remains concerned about the implementation methods, penalties, and administration of the RoHS Directive in various EU countries.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Manufacturing and sales process: The supply chain for electronic and electrical equipment is complex and often includes manufacturers in countries outside Europe, making it difficult for EU companies to implement the RoHS directive.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Testing: There is a lack of testing methods and sample processing standards for assessing the concentration of restricted substances in homogeneous materials.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Between 2008 and 2009, NWML promoted RoHS compliance to electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers and related entities through various channels, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/td>The query system received over 1,000 queries, in addition to a large number of inquiries from emails, mail, and telephone.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>The information website www.rohs.gov.uk received over 9 million views in its first year and maintained 6 million views per year thereafter.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Provide seminar speakers to enable the industry to gain a deeper understanding.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Participating in exhibitions can raise awareness in specific markets.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Use XRF to conduct market research.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Market research has covered more than 250 companies, requiring them to submit more than 12 improvement plans, 3 EU notifications, remove 4 products from shelves, and issue more than 3 warning letters.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The report indicates that compared to the previous year, companies as a whole have shown a significant improvement in their understanding and compliance with the RoHS Directive. NWML will continue to work with UK electronics and electrical equipment manufacturers to ensure that the majority of products on the market comply with the directive. NWML will also fully support the RoHS Directive in its review and amendment phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
