The European Commission issued two decisions, 2009\/428\/EC and 2009\/443\/EC, on June 5 and June 11, respectively, revising the exclusion clauses of the RoHS Directive concerning the use of lead, cadmium, and mercury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2009\/428\/EC<\/strong>
The RoHS Directive Exemption List item 22 (lead as an impurity in Faraday rotators made of rare-earth iron garnet crystals for fiber optic communication systems) (2006\/691\/EC) was amended, with the exemption period ending on December 31, 2009, and the exemption was cancelled from January 1, 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2009\/443\/EC<\/strong>
Six exemptions related to the use of lead, cadmium, and mercury have been added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/td>This relates to lead in the solder used for fine copper wires with a diameter of 100 micrometers or less in power transformers;<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Lead in metal-ceramic trimmer potentiometers;<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Cadmium in photoresistors used as optocouplers in professional audio equipment (exemption expires on December 31, 2009).<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Mercury in cathode sputtering inhibitors in DC plasma displays (the content per display shall not exceed 30 milligrams, exemption expires on July 1, 2010);<\/td><\/tr>

\"\"<\/td>Lead based on high-voltage diode electroplating layer of zinc borate glass;<\/td><\/tr>
