The European Commission is responsible for reviewing these exemptions at least every four years, and if the use of alternative substances in those applications becomes feasible, the exemption is removed (from the Annex). This Commission decision primarily addresses the review of exemptions for mercury in lighting equipment such as fluorescent lamps, high-pressure sodium (vapour) lamps, and metal halide lamps, as well as exemptions for hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, or hexavalent chromium.
