The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recently announced the addition of five Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) to its Candidate List, bringing the total number of SVHCs to 168.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly added SVHCs are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013\u00a0\u00a0Nitrobenzene: Classified as a category 1B substance with reproductive toxicity. Nitrobenzene is typically used as an intermediate under strictly controlled conditions, but it can also be used as a processing aid and solvent in formulation preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 UV-327 & UV-350: Both UV-327 and UV-350 stabilizers are commonly used as UV stabilizers in transparent plastics. Although neither of these chemicals is currently registered under REACH, evidence from Germany suggests they are already circulating in the EU market. These two SVCH substances are classified as very persistent, very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013\u00a0\u00a01,3-propanesultone: Classified as a Group 1B carcinogen. Commonly used in electrolytes during lithium-ion battery manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and its sodium and ammonium salts: Classified as a chemical substance with reproductive toxicity and persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) properties. It may replace PFOA and is commonly found in nanosprays and waterproofing agents, outdoor textiles, and paper food packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
