The United States needs to reconsider its biofuel policy because the current biofuel incentive program provides only minor environmental benefits while severely damaging taxpayers' wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        A recent research report from Rice University indicates that in 2008, the US government spent $4 billion on subsidies for biofuels, but this only replaced 2% of the gasoline supply. The report estimates that US taxpayers had to pay an average of about $82 for biofuels, equivalent to the high retail price of a barrel of gasoline, making it uneconomical in terms of cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The report also warns that bioethanol, used as an adjunct to industrial production, has many negative environmental impacts, particularly on ecosystems and fisheries along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In addition, it further reinforces previous findings that bioethanol has a minimal impact on greenhouse gas emissions. The report states that, under scientific validation, there is no consistent evidence of the climate benefits of bioethanol manufactured in the United States, and it should not be compared to the greenhouse gas emissions from conventional gasoline combustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
