SAM (an investment firm focused on sustainability investing), together with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (a leading global index provider), today announced the results of the 2010 Dow Jones Sustainability Index Annual Review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to SAM's largest global corporate sustainability analysis, 48 \u200b\u200bcompanies will be added to the Dow Jones Global Sustainability Index (DJSI World), while 46 companies will be removed \u2013 bringing the total to 318. The new additions to the Dow Jones Global Sustainability Index (by free-float market capitalization) include Standard Chartered, Morgan Stanley, and ArcelorMittal, while the removals are Toyota Motor, Royal Dutch Shell, and UniCredit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The review also resulted in 27 companies being added to the European Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index and 19 being removed; 9 companies being added to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index and 22 being removed; and 36 companies being added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index and 25 being removed. All changes will take effect when the stock market opens on September 20, 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index follows a best-of-classes approach and encompasses sustainability leaders across industries at the global and regional levels. The annual review of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index series is based on a comprehensive analysis of a company's economic, environmental, and social performance. The issues assessed include: corporate governance practices, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards, and labor standards practices. In addition to meeting general sustainability criteria, this review also incorporates industry-specific sustainability requirements for each of the 57 industries defined in the International Classification Benchmark (ICB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, SAM identified 19 super-sectors out of 57 industries and their leading companies. The new leading companies for 2010\/2011 were: Air France-KLM (travel and leisure), AkzoNobel (chemicals), ANZ Banking Group (banking), BMW (automobiles and parts), EDP, EDP (facilities), Australian Real Estate Group (real estate), Ita\u00fa Investment Bank (financial services), Lotte Shopping (retail), Nokia (technology), Pearson (media), Philips Electronics (personal and household products), Roche (healthcare), Sasol (oil and gas), Siam Cement (construction and materials), Swiss Re (insurance), Telef\u00f3nica (telecommunications), SkyEx (industrial supplies and services), Unilever (food and beverage), and Xstrata (basic resources).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
