Furthermore, the average concentration of xylene, another harmful substance, reached 827.9 micrograms per cubic meter, exceeding the South Korean standard (700 micrograms per cubic meter); the levels of formaldehyde and toluene, also carcinogens, reached 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter and 517.6 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. While these levels are lower than the residential standards in South Korea, they still exceed the standards in Germany and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to investigations, the levels of harmful substances in some vehicles can increase up to eight times the normal level when interior temperatures rise in summer. However, the South Korean government has not established standards for in-vehicle air quality to regulate \"new car syndrome.\" The South Korean National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report indicates that xylene is extremely harmful to health. Furthermore, SUVs have higher levels of formaldehyde and harmful substances such as toluene and xylene compared to regular cars. However, the NTSB did not disclose the names of South Korean car manufacturers or their models. The report indicates that the highest levels of harmful substances are found in the headliner, seats, and floor mats. The headliner emits benzene and styrene, the seats emit formaldehyde, the floor mats emit toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, while the dashboard emits styrene and xylene. A total of twenty-four types of harmful substances were found in new car interiors, and the emissions of formaldehyde and ethylbenzene only gradually decrease four months after the car leaves the factory. <br>In addition, a survey of 800 new car owners revealed that 51.5% of respondents reported experiencing symptoms of exposure to harmful substances while driving.
