Federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq has issued guidelines limiting cadmium levels in children's jewelry to below 130 ppm, as swallowing or putting jewelry in a child's mouth can cause serious health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Health stated that wearing jewelry alone is not considered problematic, but ingesting cadmium would be very dangerous. From the date the guidelines were proposed until October 10, 2011, the public could comment on the cadmium content in the government's proposed guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this ban is passed, the new law will allow the government to follow up with suppliers selling toys containing cadmium, conduct risk assessments, and even order suppliers to recall products or find remedial measures. The government may also pursue prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadmium is a cheap substitute for lead in lower-end imported jewelry, but if ingested through swallowing, prolonged licking, or inhalation of the jewelry, it can be more harmful than lead.
