Despite EU legislation aimed at ensuring proper disposal of electrical and electronic equipment during the waste disposal phase, the illegal export of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) continues to increase year by year, according to a report by the European Environment Agency (EEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The EU's WEEE Directive imposes strict requirements on the recycling and disposal of electronic waste within the EU. Similarly, because these items are generally classified as hazardous materials, it is illegal for EU member states to export electronic waste to non-OECD countries. However, although the EU cannot provide sufficient data on electronic waste imports and exports, there are numerous indications that a significant amount of European electronic waste is disguised as second-hand goods and exported to West Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report also points out that in these countries, electronic waste is often not recycled and disposed of through formal means, which often results in significant environmental pollution and harm to the health of local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the European Environment Agency maintains that the EU has a moral obligation to combat WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) illegally exported under the guise of secondhand goods. Even if the illegal transfer of WEEE can be completely eradicated, the legal trade and export of waste electrical and electronic equipment will indirectly continue to harm the environment and public health in countries outside the EU. The report further emphasizes that supporting the development of environmentally and socially sound recycling systems in West Africa and other countries is an important task for the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
