The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)'s latest \"Reporting Matters\" report shows considerable progress in sustainability reporting by the world's leading companies. This sustainability report, covering 157 member companies from 20 industries and 35 countries, indicates significant advancements in corporate reporting in terms of financial statements and information disclosure, and a gradual shift towards digital reporting. This year, 74% of the corporate reports reviewed by Reporting Matters received a higher overall score than the 2013 baseline year, and 79% of the reports acknowledged the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in some way. On September 25, 2015, governments worldwide established 17 Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure equitable distribution of wealth. The deadline for achieving these 17 goals is 2030. The new report shows that 44% of companies now publish both traditional PDF reports and online reports, a better performance than the 23% when the World Council for Sustainability first began tracking corporate reporting in 2014. 34% of corporate reports combine financial and non-financial information, up from 23% in 2013, with 22% of those using the International Integrated Reporting Framework. 27% of the reports indicate a correlation between senior management compensation and sustainability metrics, but only five companies provided specific percentages. Peter Bakker, CEO and President of the World Council for Sustainability, stated, \u201cThis year\u2019s report shows that concrete change and transformation will be crucial to achieving sustainability goals\u2026 We are seeing a trend towards online reporting, with non-financial reporting becoming the mainstream of integrated reporting, and sustainability becoming central to corporate governance, finance, and risk management. This expands our influence and makes more sustainable companies more successful.\u201d Despite this progress, the pressure on companies to provide comprehensive disclosure while meeting the demands of key stakeholders is increasing. Companies must find ways to meet these challenges and ensure that all information in all reports is concise and clear. Reporting Matters provides corporate reporting templates, along with overall trends and comparisons over the past five years, to assist companies in writing sustainable or integrated reports. Baker says this is helpful to companies because it allows them to share important insights across different industries and collectively improve standards. This year's report also includes recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), risk management recommendations from the WBCSD in collaboration with the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO), and updates on human rights status and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) reporting. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines remain the most widely referenced reporting guidelines and standards, cited in 85% of corporate reports. 18% of corporate reports have switched to using the new GRI standards.
