On the 21st, Danish and German power grid operators issued a letter of intent for cooperation, which will study the future connection of their two countries' power grids via an interconnector on Bornholm. The plan envisions developing offshore wind power near the islands and connecting them to electricity. The wind farm on Bornholm Island will be located approximately 20 kilometers south and southwest of the island, with a capacity of 2GW. The other energy island, an artificial island to be built in the North Sea, will have a capacity of 3GW. The Danish Energy Agency and Danish power grid operator Energinet will conduct a detailed study of the environmental impacts of the development on the seabed, the artificial islands, and the offshore wind turbines, with results expected in 2024. The energy islands are to be completed by 2030 and connected to the power grids of neighboring countries. Bornholm Island: The World's First Energy Island, with Future Connections to Several European Countries. \u00d8rsted, the world's largest offshore wind developer, first proposed the Bornholm Island plan in 2019, envisioning the island as the world's first energy island. Initially, \u00d8rsted proposed developing 1GW of offshore wind power 20 kilometers southwest of Bornholm. The long-term plan envisions 3-5 GW of offshore wind power in the waters surrounding the island, with connections to Denmark, Poland, Germany, Sweden, and other countries. The Danish government approved the two energy island projects in 2020. In January of this year, German grid operator 50Hertz and Energinet signed a letter of intent to collaborate on the Bornholm Energy Island project. Offshore wind power will be fed into the island's interconnector, connecting the two countries' grids. The two Transmission System Operators (TSOs) plan to conduct a feasibility study by the end of the year to determine profitability. More Baltic countries and wind farms are expected to join in the future. The North Sea artificial island, the world's first artificial energy island, is initially planned to have 3 GW of offshore wind power, with the potential to expand to over 10 GW in the future.
