Previous studies have found microplastics\u2014plastic fragments or fibers smaller than 5mm\u2014in a variety of foods, including tea, salt, seaweed, milk, seafood, honey, sugar, beer, vegetables, and soft drinks. They're also found in tap water, and even more so in bottled water. Microplastics have been found in most places scientists have visited, both on land and in the ocean, including the most remote. Microplastics threaten wildlife and can even cause death. But how exactly do these ubiquitous plastics affect human health? Professor Mark Taylor, an environmental pollution expert at Macquarie University in Australia, said, \"No one really knows the answer. But the absence of evidence doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist.\" Scientists have found microplastics in rice from various countries. Last week, an analysis by Australian scientists found microplastics in every sample of rice purchased from supermarkets and grocery stores in Queensland, regardless of whether the rice was grown in Thailand, India, Pakistan, or Australia, and whether it was packaged in plastic or paper. Washing rice can remove some microplastics, but this study used specially filtered water for washing, while most households only have access to tap water, which contains trace amounts of plastic. Microwaveable instant rice contained the most microplastics, but the amounts were small overall. The study showed that unwashed rice typically contained 3.7mg of microplastics per 100g, while washed rice contained 2.8mg, and instant rice contained 13.3mg of plastic per 100g. A grain of rice weighs about 30mg. The lead author of the study, Dr. Jake O\u2019Brien of the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences, said the higher levels of plastic in the microwaveable instant samples were likely due to additional processing before packaging, rather than from the plastic packaging itself.
