The commercial launch of 5G is imminent. As tech giants release new 5G phones and countries rapidly deploy base stations, laying the groundwork for the next era of communications, the world must confront the environmental impact of communications chips. Gallium arsenide (Galium Arsenide) is a key contributor to the successful rollout of 5G communications. Gallium arsenide's material properties allow for faster electron movement, making it a key component of chips used in mobile phone power amplifiers (PAs). However, the arsenic in GaAs is a carcinogenic and environmentally harmful poison. Arsenic, a compound used in ancient killings, is a compound of GaAs, and blackfoot disease is also caused by arsenic-contaminated water. During the manufacturing process of communications wafers, if arsenic-containing wastewater or waste oil is not properly treated, the arsenic can enter groundwater systems through weathering and dissolution, causing pollution. In the communications era, addressing arsenic pollution has become a global priority. Ling Yongjian, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University who has long been studying green chemical methods, has separated arsenic from waste cutting oil containing gallium arsenide through wet smelting[1].
