Following the Guide to Greener Electronics published every quarter, Greenpeace invited electronic product manufacturers to provide the company's most environmentally friendly products/models for evaluation in 2008, and investigated the most environmentally friendly products currently on the market. In 2008, The results of the investigation will be announced in December. The name of this survey is "Green Electronic...The search continues". A total of 15 manufacturers participated in this evaluation, namely:
Acer, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, RIM/Blackberry, Sharp, Samsung, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba.
The 15 manufacturers participating in the evaluation provided a total of 50 products for Greenpeace to rate. The scoring basis is divided into 4 categories:
1. Use of hazardous chemical substances: Toxic substances include PVC, brominated flame retardants (BRFs), antimony, phthalates, beryllium and other hazards human body or environmental substances;
2. Power consumption of the products: rated according to Energy Star and US Environmental Protection Agency standards;
3. Product lifecycle: including the proportion of recycled plastics used and the recyclability rate;
4. Availability of data: Data on energy usage from product production to sales can be used as a comparison item, and research and development of designs that reduce environmental harm can also be used as supporting information for the evaluation.
The main findings of the investigation report are as follows:
- Participating electronics manufacturers use less PVC and hazardous chemicals.
- LED Displays (liquid crystal displays) are becoming more and more popular because they consume less energy and do not contain mercury.
- Large products such as TVs and screens use more recycled plastic. But most mobile phones, desktop computers and notebook computers still need to increase the use of recycled plastics.
- Except for a few products that have not yet met the latest Energy Star requirements, most manufacturers have quickly adopted and complied with the new Energy Star specifications.
- Most manufacturers can trace the energy resources used in the production process of their products, but there is no international standard that can serve as a benchmark for comparison.
Electronic products that perform best:
The Lenovo model L244 0x wide screen is completely free of PVC plastics and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and is also free of phthalates, antimony and beryllium. In addition, nearly 30% uses recycled plastic in its plastic components, and its LED backlight display is mercury-free.
