British climate group displays thousands of children's shoes, urging government not to bail out carbon-intensive industries.

  • 2020-08-07

On May 18, the climate change advocacy group Extinction Rebellion neatly arranged more than 2,000 pairs of children's shoes donated by Londoners in Trafalgar Square, London. With the slogan "COVID Today Climate Tomorrow Act Now," they used non-violent civil disobedience to demand that the British government stop providing relief to carbon-intensive industries that pollute the environment.

Extinction Resistance activists lined up the children's shoes in Trafalgar Square and unfurled a long banner that read: "COVID Today > Climate Tomorrow > Act Now."

The group stated that Extinction Resistants is calling on governments to take action on the climate crisis during the COVID-19 recovery so that children and young people are not subjected to an even deeper crisis.

Trafalgar Square, once a popular tourist destination, is now almost deserted. These children's shoes were neatly placed in the empty square. These shoes were donated by Londoners and will be donated to the charity "Shoe Aid" after the demonstration.

The fight against extinction aims to bring about timely changes to the current political, economic, and social structures of the world in order to prevent the catastrophes predicted by scientists studying climate change from becoming a reality.

Extinction Rebellion advocates for nonviolent civil disobedience to force governments to reduce carbon emissions and avoid a climate crisis that could lead to hunger and social collapse.
