Adidas launches ocean debris-themed eco-friendly 3D concept shoes

  • 2016-10-06

Since becoming one of the founding members of the ocean conservation organization Parley for the Oceans in April 2015, Adidas has been actively developing innovative designs, hoping to raise awareness of ocean conservation among consumers and other product manufacturers through green product design. Therefore, at the Parley for the Oceans x COP 21 – Oceans. Climate. Life event held this week, Adidas unveiled the futurecraft 3D-printed concept running shoe, based on the best-selling 2015 Ultra Boost.

These limited-edition commemorative shoes are a collaboration between Adidas and Parley for the Oceans, using recycled ocean debris as the raw materials for these running shoes. The shoes consist of two main structures: the upper and insole are made from recycled fishing nets, while the sole support structure is made from a mixture of recycled polyester and discarded gillnets, then 3D printed.

Adidas stated that these concept shoes demonstrate how innovative design thinking can help prevent human-caused damage to the oceans and plastic pollution. Adidas primarily provides Parley for the Oceans with educational communication and outreach support, and sponsors its Ocean Plastic AIR (Avoid, Intercept, and Redesign) program to address ocean plastic pollution.

Starting this April, Adidas announced it will phase out the use of plastic bags in its stores, with the goal of achieving a zero-plastic-bag policy across all stores by the first quarter of 2016. Furthermore, by the end of this month, it will completely ban the use of microbeads in its personal care products and completely prohibit bottled water in its headquarters meeting rooms.
