Taiwan's Ministry of Environment releases latest "National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory"

In accordance with Article 13 of the Climate Change Response Act, the Ministry of Environment released the "National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory (2024 Edition)" on June 25. Although Taiwan is not a signatory, it voluntarily aligns with international standards and discloses them to contribute to global carbon reduction. After cross-ministerial compilation, Taiwan's 2022 emissions information was announced on the same day.

Key points summary:

Taiwan's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 were 285.97 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e). After deducting 21.83 MtCO2e from carbon sinks, net emissions were 264.13 MtCO2e, a decrease of 4.07% from 2021.
While greenhouse gas emissions have generally increased in other countries around the world due to post-pandemic economic recovery, Taiwan's greenhouse gas emissions achieved a significant decline in 2022. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) report, "Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions," shows that global greenhouse gas emissions reached a record high of 53.8 Gt CO2e in 2022, an increase of 1.37% from 2021.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its 2024 "Carbon Dioxide Emissions in 2023" report, which indicated that global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 increased by 1.3% compared to 2021. In contrast, Taiwan's total and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions decreased during the same period. This demonstrates Taiwan's success in controlling greenhouse gas emissions amidst the post-pandemic economic recovery, as well as the significant achievements in recent years in implementing energy transition and various sectoral emission reduction action plans.
While greenhouse gas emissions and economic growth are generally considered to be positively correlated, Taiwan's 2022 economic growth rate, which increased by 2.60% compared to 2021, is significantly out of sync with its greenhouse gas emissions reductions. This demonstrates Taiwan's significant progress in promoting green growth and low-carbon transformation. Compared to other countries globally, Taiwan's performance is also among the best.
