The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report in Incheon, South Korea, on October 8th, warning that unchecked global warming will lead to even more severe climate change-related disasters. According to its latest special report on global warming, the Earth's temperature has risen by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) since the 19th century. If it continues to rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) or even 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius), this 0.9-degree difference will have a profound impact on the planet. For example, this 0.9-degree difference could lead to deadly heat waves, water shortages, and coastal flooding for tens of millions of people worldwide. The Arctic Ocean might not freeze in summer, and coral reefs in tropical regions would disappear. The New York Times has compiled the following seven points from the report to explore the differences between the 0.9-degree difference between a 2.7-degree and 3.6-degree Fahrenheit warming scenario. Arctic Ocean: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, sea ice will remain for most of the summer; if the rise is 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the chances of ice-free Arctic Ocean will increase tenfold, leading to the large-scale loss of habitat for polar bears, whales, seals, and seabirds. Heat Waves: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, an estimated 14% of the global population will be affected by severe heat waves; if temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the affected population will more than double to 37%, with the largest increase in the number of unusually hot days in tropical regions. Water Shortages: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, an estimated 350 million people worldwide will face severe water shortages in metropolitan areas; if temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the affected metropolitan population will increase to 411 million, with a significant increase in drought in the Mediterranean region. Plants and Fauna: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, 6% of insects, 8% of plants, and 4% of vertebrates will lose their habitats; if temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, 18% of insects, 16% of plants, and 8% of vertebrates will lose their habitats. Coral Reefs: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, large-scale die-offs of coral reefs will occur frequently worldwide; if temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, most coral reefs will disappear. Sea Levels: If temperatures rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, it is estimated that by 2100, 31 million to 69 million people worldwide will be affected by coastal flooding due to rising sea levels; if temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the affected population will reach 32 million to 80 million, with small island nations likely to be the hardest hit. Crops: If temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, global crop yields will be lower than if temperatures rise by only 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America.
