New Challenges for the Electronics Industry: Recycling One Billion Pounds of E-waste Annually

Consumer electronics giants launched their first nationwide electronics recycling program on April 13. The goal is to recycle one billion pounds of electronics annually by 2016. One billion pounds of discarded electronics, if not properly recycled, would be enough to fill a 50-foot tractor trailer, lined up for 475 miles, or fill a 71,000-seat football field. Leading the eCycling initiative in Washington, D.C., were the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Best Buy, Panasonic North America, Sony Electronics, and Toshiba Information Systems, among others. At the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), stated, "The launch of the eCycling program marks a watershed moment in the history of electronics recycling in the United States." This program is the result of collaboration between consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, collectors, recyclers, NGOs, and various levels of government, coordinated by the CEA. To reach the goal of one billion pounds of recycled and reused electronics, the more than 5,000 industry-sponsored recycling centers must be more consumer-conscious and increase their opportunities to collect recyclable items. One of the program's key actions is educating consumers, making recycling old electronics as easy as buying new ones using new online tools and mobile applications. Industry professionals are also willing to take responsibility for increasing electronics recycling and provide transparent and evidence-based indicators for eCycling's procedures and standards. The one billion pound goal is indeed not easy to achieve, representing more than three times the amount of electronics recycled in 2010. To facilitate progress tracking, the CEA will use 2010 as a baseline to publish a national annual progress report to measure the growth of eCycling. The CEA favors third-party certification and encourages facilities with recycling facilities to recycle more electronic products. Regarding the eCycling initiative, the consumer electronics industry also supports a certification system for non-mandatory recyclers, enabling up to one billion pounds of recyclable items to be recycled in third-party certified facilities. The initiative also actively seeks continued collaboration with the Electronics Management Task Force, initiated by the Obama administration and jointly launched by the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the General Services Administration. This task force is developing a national strategy for responsible electronics recycling.
