IEC launches global RoHS standard based on EU standards

  • 2017-10-12

The IEC has launched a global RoHS standard based on EU standards. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), established in 1906, is primarily responsible for international standardization work in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, and is the world's oldest international standardization organization. In October 2016, the IEC published the IEC 6300 standard, based on the EU standard EN 50581, to assist electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers in complying with the EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS Directive). The RoHS Directive requires electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers to provide product technical documentation and proof of compliance with hazardous substance limits. Because the electronic and electrical product supply chain spans the globe, encompassing various industries and companies of all sizes, the IEC, through the launch of the IEC 6300 standard, defines the scope and content of technical documentation disclosure, as well as the methods for information collection and assessment. The aim is to ensure consistency in information disclosure among global electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers, regardless of size, saving upstream and downstream companies in the supply chain the manpower and time costs associated with complying with international hazardous substance regulations. Iain Lindsay, EU regulatory manager and one of the editors of the IEC standard, pointed out that although there are various hazardous substance limit directives similar to RoHS internationally, and the hazardous substances and their limits vary, companies that prepare product technical documentation based on the IEC 6300 standard will be able to meet the requirements of most international hazardous substance limit regulations. This will save companies that supply electronic and electrical product components to different countries around the world a lot of costs associated with international regulatory compliance. This international standard is almost identical to the EU standard EN 50581, but all the wording related to the RoHS directive has been removed from EN 50581 to broaden compliance with RoHS-like regulations in different countries around the world. Material declarations are a recommended preparation item, not a mandatory one. Although the IEC 6300 standard has only been in existence for less than three months, SMEs in Taiwan's electronic and electrical supply chain have already received requests from downstream brand customers to provide product technical documentation based on the IEC 6300 standard. Therefore, it is recommended that manufacturers in the supply chain familiarize themselves with the standard's content and prepare for information disclosure in advance.
