EU environmental policy is far ahead of the US

When discussing environmental policy, the EU has undoubtedly surpassed the US in many aspects. However, EU member states are not required to handle the management work, currently only barely acknowledging the possibility of global warming, the need for recycling, or other national-level environmental policies. The EU's annual Environmental Policy Review (EPR) not only highlights the major developments in member states' environmental policies over the past year but also provides methods to monitor the objectives of each policy, including recent research, environmental trends, and major controversies in 2007. In 2006, the EU took a significant step forward in addressing climate change through the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and updated its Sustainable Development Strategy. The new REACH regulation, adopted since December 2006, is expected to require the registration of 30,000 chemical substances, with the EU hoping to gradually phase out these hazardous chemicals and replace them with safer alternatives.

In addition, the EU's European Energy Strategy projects a 20% reduction in energy consumption by 2020, and the Commission also proposed a new energy policy combining energy and climate change issues as early as 2007, aiming to enable member states to achieve the target of a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

This review also specifically mentioned that approximately 420 cases of violations of environmental policy had occurred by the end of 2006, and the Commission has begun to improve the management of these cases.

The European Commission will continue to seek ways to improve energy efficiency, eco-design, pollution-free technologies, and the implementation of environmental policies.
