South Korea RoHS will be officially implemented on January 1, 2008

On April 2, 2007, the National Assembly of South Korea formally passed the Act for Resource Recycling of Electrical/Electronic Products and Automobiles. The regulations, similar to a series of EU standards, include RoHS, WEEE, and ELV directives. This law was expected to officially take effect on January 1, 2008.

Although South Korean RoHS is a regulation concerning the resource recycling of electrical/electronic products and automobiles and incorporates elements of EU directives, it is also unique. According to Michael Kirschner of Design Chain Associates, like EU RoHS and China RoHS, South Korean RoHS currently lacks specific details regarding the regulations. Therefore, the initial classification of electrical/electronic products and vehicles will be based on South Korea's Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources. The types of hazardous substances, concentration limits, and environmental requirements will be further defined and published by the Korean Environmental Protection Agency.

Detailed project specifications will be released in the next phase, including:

• List of electronic and electrical equipment and vehicles
• Hazardous substances, limits, and testing methods
• Annual vehicle recycling targets and assessment methods
• Testing method requirements for hazardous substances
