EU withdraws two new RoHS substance proposals

  • 2025-07-08

The developments surrounding the EU RoHS Directive have been a hot topic for electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers, particularly the EU's proposed addition of two hazardous substances. According to the latest developments on the EU website, on December 10, 2024, the EU withdrew its proposal to add tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) to RoHS.

This means that the new restrictions on these two substances have not been implemented as planned, and electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers do not need to make corresponding compliance adjustments for these two substances for the time being. However, the EU has stated that the feedback from stakeholders will still be used for future reference. Therefore, companies still need to continue to pay attention to subsequent updates and changes to the EU RoHS Directive to ensure product compliance. CTI will continue to track the latest information and provide customers with industry updates, committed to providing comprehensive one-stop solutions for companies worldwide.

Timeline of the EU RoHS proposal to add two new substances:
◉ In March 2021, the Pack 15 evaluation report was released, recommending the inclusion of TBBP-A and MCCPs in RoHS restrictions
◉ In May 2022, the European Commission announced a legislative proposal to add TBBP-A and MCCPs to RoHS restrictions, with a plan to pass it in Q4 2022
◉ In 2023, the European Commission updated the proposal approval date to Q4 2023
◉ On December 10, 2024, the EU withdrew the proposal to add TBBP-A and MCCPs to RoHS
