Britain discards over 5 million tons of food annually.

According to a British survey, the UK discards approximately 5.3 million tons of food annually, which translates to a waste of about 6.2 billion cubic meters of water. In addition, the production or cultivation of this food also generates 14 million tons of carbon dioxide for the planet.

A report released on World Water Day (March 22) by the UK nonprofit organization Waste & Resources Action (WRAP) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) states that "it is well known that greenhouse gas emissions are produced in the production of food or beverages, and that this process also consumes precious water resources, yet it has not received the attention it deserves."

According to surveys, the amount of food wasted by the British public in a year, when converted into the water resources consumed in its production or cultivation, is almost twice the annual water consumption of an average British household. About 25% of the water needed for production comes from within the UK, while the rest comes from abroad. The US Environmental Protection Agency has announced that Americans waste 34 million tons of food a year.
