The Government of Canada has released the updated and final version of Canada's National Implementation Plan (NIP) under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
The purpose of this document is to clarify to Parties and the public Canada’s plans, policies and programs to implement obligations related to the nine new persistent organic pollutants added to the 2009 Convention.
These 9 POPs are as follows:
1. α-Hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH);
2. β-Hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH);
3. Lindane (γ-HCH);
4. Chlordecone;
5. Hexabromobiphenyl (HBB);
6. Hexabromodiphenyl ether (Hexa-BDE) and heptabromodiphenyl ether (Hepta-BDE);
7. Pentachlorobenzene (PeCB);
8. Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (tetra-BDE) and pentabromodiphenyl ether (penta-BDE);
9. Perfluorooctane sulfonate, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) of perfluorosulfonyl fluorooctane.
In April 2011, Canada approved nine new persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and is preparing to update its national implementation plan in accordance with the reporting obligations under Article 7 of the Stockholm Convention. At the same time, the Canadian government stated that the final version had been submitted to the Convention Secretariat before April 4, 2013.
