Chinese mainland airlines will refuse to pay the EU's new carbon emissions trading tax.

The Air Transport Association of China (ATAC) announced on January 4th that Chinese mainland airlines will refuse to pay any expenses under the EU's new Emissions Trading System (ETS). Launched in 2005, the ETS is one of the EU's main pillars in addressing climate change. From January 1st, all airlines using EU airports are included in this trading system. Chai Haibo, Deputy Secretary-General of AAC, stated, "China will not cooperate with the EU on the ETS. Therefore, Chinese mainland airlines will not levy any additional fees related to emissions taxes on passengers."
