The European Commission has added new regulations on the use of phosphates in cleaning agents.

On March 14, the European Commission published Regulation (EU) No. 259/2012 in the Official Journal of the European Union, amending the original Cleaning Agents Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004, adding restrictions on the use of phosphates and other phosphorus compounds in household laundry detergents and dishwashing liquids, with the aim of reducing phosphate emissions into water.

The Official Journal of the European Union also provides a transition period prior to the effective date, summarized as follows:

Cleaning agents	Limit	Final effective date
washing powder	The phosphate content in the standard dosage as defined in Appendix VII, Part II of the regulations shall not exceed or equal to 0.5g	2013年6月30日
Dishwashing liquid	The phosphate content in the standard dosage as defined in Appendix VII, Part II of the regulations shall not exceed or equal to 0.3g	2017年1月1日
