Japan plans to develop ISO international standards for marine biodegradable plastics.

Japan Plans to Develop International Standards for Marine Biodegradable Plastics Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) plans to propose to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the coming years to develop international standards for "marine biodegradable plastics" in order to maintain the competitiveness of Japanese companies in this field. According to a report in the Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun, the Japanese government recently met with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), the Japan Biodegradable Plastics Association, and several related companies to discuss the scientific data and technical foundations needed for the issuance of ISO standards. Since countries such as Germany and Italy are also developing ISO standards, Japan, as one of the leading countries in biodegradable plastics, naturally does not want to fall behind and hopes to achieve differentiation through the development of ISO standards to enhance the competitiveness of Japanese companies. "Marine biodegradable plastics," as the name suggests, are plastic materials that can be naturally decomposed by microorganisms in the ocean. The industry expects this to significantly reduce the time plastic waste remains in the ocean. In Japan, major manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Chemical and Kaneka are leading the way in developing this technology. Every year, more than 8 million tons of plastic waste flow into the ocean globally. According to estimates by the Sankei Shimbun, by 2050, the amount of plastic waste in the ocean will be heavier than all the fish combined. Plastic waste, after being exposed to ultraviolet light and battered by waves, breaks down into microplastics smaller than 5 millimeters, which are easily absorbed by marine life, causing significant harm to the ecosystem and human health. Developing countries such as China and Indonesia account for the largest share of global plastic waste emissions. At the G20 summit in June, Japan proposed replacing plastic restrictions with technological innovation that accelerates the development of new materials, in order to meet the needs of economic development in developing countries. While the industry anticipates the widespread adoption of this plastic material, it also worries about the emergence of inferior imitations in developing markets, leading to a "bad money drives out good" phenomenon. The industry is urging the government to establish ISO standards as soon as possible to visualize the industry's technical capabilities, thereby differentiating the reliability of technology and quality, and protecting the competitive advantage of Japanese companies.
