Burger King Stops Buying Indonesian Palm Oil

Fast food giant Burger King's decision to stop buying palm oil from Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group, which is accused of destroying rainforests, won praise from environmentalists on the 4th.

Burger King, the American hamburger chain, announced on the 2nd that it is terminating its contract with the Sinar Mas Group because its farm management model does not adhere to sustainability principles. Burger King cited an independent audit report stating that the Sinar Mas Group violated several regulations, including planting in peat bogs and secondary forests, "actions that are inconsistent with our company's commitment to corporate responsibility."

Burger King did not specify the source of its palm oil, which is used for frying. Sinar Mas Group expressed regret over the decision but stated it would work to persuade Burger King to adhere to sustainable operating principles. Greenpeace welcomed Burger King's decision, accusing Sinar Mas Group of clearing forests that protect orangutans and other endangered species.

Unilever, Nestlé, and Kraft Foods recently suspended their deals with Sinar Mas Group.
