Greenpeace releases the ninth edition of its "Guide to Greener Electronics" NO.34/2008

Since the first edition of the Guide to Greener Electronics was published in August 2006, Greenpeace has updated the assessment every three months. The latest ninth edition was released on September 16, 2008, which assessed 18 world-renowned manufacturers, covering products such as computers, mobile phones, televisions and game consoles.

Key Evaluation Points

This evaluation continues the key points of the eighth edition, assessing various major manufacturers based on 15 criteria, covering the following:
	By removing harmful substances, major manufacturers' products are being rectified.
	Responsible retrieval/recycling of waste products
	Improve corporate policies and practices related to climate and energy

Evaluation and ranking

Compared to the eighth edition, which saw a decrease in overall scores due to a shift in evaluation focus, the top five in this evaluation all scored above 5 points (in the eighth edition, only Sony Ericsson and Sony tied for first place with 5.1 points), demonstrating the improvement of major manufacturers. Fujitsu Siemens was the most notable, jumping from fifteenth to third place. While Apple ranked lower, its 4.1 points showed significant improvement. Apple's fourth edition iPod, released on September 9, 2008, claimed to be free of mercury and brominated flame retardants (BFR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which are of great concern to Greenpeace. Whether this will allow Apple to achieve a high score in the next evaluation remains to be seen.
