United Nations: Record High Global Greenhouse Emissions Could Have Devastating Consequences

According to a report released today by the United Nations, global greenhouse gas emissions hit a record high last year, and if countries do not take necessary action, global temperatures this century will rise by more than twice the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold set by the Paris Climate Agreement, reaching 3.2 degrees Celsius. The UN climate summit will be held next week in Madrid, Spain, to urge world leaders to curb climate change. The "Emissions Gap Report," released today, is one of several research reports released ahead of the summit. The report calculates the necessary reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned last year that failure to curb warming could lead to significant global changes, including the disappearance of almost all coral reefs and most Arctic sea ice. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in a summary of its "Emissions Gap Report," stated that based on current national commitments to reduce emissions, "global temperatures are projected to rise by 3.2 degrees Celsius this century, triggering widespread and devastating climate shocks." John Christensen, the report's lead author, stated at a press conference, "As grandfathers, we don't want to leave this problem to our grandchildren." The report indicates that the safest global warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Paris Agreement is still achievable, provided that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 7.6% annually between 2020 and 2030. If the allowable warming is increased to 2 degrees Celsius, only a 2.7% reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions is required. (Source: Central News Agency, November 27, 2019)
