EMSA: EU maritime emissions must be slashed

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) warned on September 1, 2021, that further significant reductions in maritime transport emissions are necessary if the European Union is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. An EMSA report indicates that maritime transport to and within the EU accounted for 13.5% of the continent's transport-related emissions in 2019. According to EMSA, nearly 77% of Europe's external trade and 35% of all trade between EU member states occurs through maritime shipping. The report states that while EU CO2 emissions from shipping have fallen by approximately 26% since 1990, they still account for approximately 16 million tons, or 18% of global maritime emissions. The report attributes this reduction to fleet renewal and greater energy efficiency. EMSA stated that for Europe to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the maritime sector needs to take sustained action to reduce its environmental footprint. Furthermore, further action is necessary to "achieve our zero-pollution ambition and halt and reverse biodiversity loss." Emissions of sulfur dioxide, another dangerous global warming and acidic gas, reached 1.63 million tons in 2019, accounting for 16% of global maritime emissions. The report notes that these emissions have decreased due to stricter European legislation on sulfur dioxide in fuels. Emissions in coastal areas of Denmark have decreased by 60%, and emissions in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands have decreased by over 20% between 2015 and 2019.
