A "breathing" roof – experiencing Chicago's green roofs

In downtown Chicago, there is a lush, green garden spanning 1,900 square meters. This oasis is home to over 20,000 plants of more than 150 varieties, where butterflies, bees, and birds flit among the silvergrass, clover, and cacti. The garden also houses a beehive, and the garden's managers annually sell the honey produced to raise funds for extracurricular activities for teenagers. This green space isn't located in a park, but on the roof of Chicago City Hall—it was Chicago's first green roof.

In recent years, with the rapid expansion of urban areas, heat waves have swept through many cities. "Green roofs" can reduce roof heat radiation and alleviate the heat island effect; the temperature on the top floor of Chicago City Hall is much lower than that of a traditional asphalt roof. In addition, urban green roofs act like reservoirs, intercepting and storing large amounts of rainwater for more than 48 hours, reducing rainwater flow and alleviating urban flooding to some extent.

The head of Chicago's Environmental Protection Agency stated that while adding environmentally friendly elements increases building costs, it is economically beneficial in the long run. The large-scale implementation of rooftop greening has effectively reduced energy consumption. Furthermore, rooftop gardens provide a favorable habitat for insects, a food source for birds, and a relaxing space for citizens to escape the heat, fostering harmony between people and nature.
