Costco starts testing products for harmful substances

Costco Begins Testing for Hazardous Substances in Products US retailer Costco recently announced a new hazardous substance testing program called the Smart Screening Programme (SSP) for its products. Following strong demands from numerous NGOs, Costco has finally announced the implementation of this new hazardous substance management initiative. According to its official website, Costco has consistently conducted various hazardous substance tests on specific consumer products and ensures that its products comply with local consumer regulations at its global retail locations, such as the EU REACH regulation, the US TSCA, and California Proposition 65. Under the newly launched SSP program, a list of over 300 Chemicals of Concern (CoCs) has been established, with no concerns about excessive levels of hazardous substances. However, the website does not disclose which specific consumer products are tested for which regulations. According to a report by the international NGO Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) on the chemical substance management of 11 major US retail brands, Costco's performance last year was unsatisfactory, scoring only 9.5 out of a possible 130. In this survey, Walmart and Target ranked at the top. The SCHF pointed out that although Costco's official website still doesn't provide information on the products tested by the SSP (Safety, Sustainability, and Protection) and the specific hazardous substances involved, this is at least a first step for Costco in addressing consumer demands for hazardous substance management. The SCHF further urges Costco to follow Walmart and Target's example in the near future, clearly listing the hazardous substance management list, tested items, and corresponding regulations, in order to meet the growing expectations of consumers for transparency regarding hazardous substance information.
