May pushes new law to challenge UK's net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

If the temperature rises by 0.9℉, the earth will become sick and 400 million people will be severely short of water.

8 cities are facing the threat of sinking and governments should no longer remain silent

Plastic straws are killing the planet. Los Angeles plans to completely ban them in 2021

(Central News Agency reporter Lin Honghan, Los Angeles, 4th) The Los Angeles City Council passed a proposal today to increase restrictions on plastic straws and plan to completely ban them in 2021. The city councilor who proposed the proposal showed a photo of a sea turtle with a straw inserted into its nose, emphasizing that "the misuse of plastic is killing people." Earth". California, USA, will restrict specific restaurants from actively providing plastic straws from January 1 next year. The Los Angeles City Council voted today to expand the scope of application to fast food operators. California Governor Jerry Brown signed a new law in September. Starting from January 1, 2019, all full-service dine-in restaurants in California are prohibited from actively providing plastic straws unless customers ask for them, but this does not include fast food restaurants. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously 12-0 today to propose drafting an ordinance requiring all dining establishments not to provide plastic straws unless requested by customers. Compared with California’s plastic restriction measures, the ordinance that the city of Los Angeles is preparing to promote includes all restaurants, including fast food restaurants. However, after communicating with fast food operators, this measure allows an exception. For restaurants with drive-thru lanes, operators can inform customers in the car that they can ask for straws if they wish. After the proposal is drafted, it still needs to be approved by the committee and parliament. Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, who sponsored the proposal, expressed the hope that this ordinance will be implemented on Earth Day, April 22, 2019, for restaurants with more than 26 employees, and will be extended to all restaurants on October 1.

Taiwan’s carbon tax to fight climate change will be listed as option

The 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) concluded last Saturday. The Environmental Protection Agency held a press conference today to explain the "results." The media questioned whether they could see the "actions to combat climate change" mentioned in the press release by the government. "Taiwan shows diverse vitality." What specific and proactive carbon reduction strategies are there in the future? Cai Hongde, acting director of the Environmental Protection Agency, said that carbon tax is one of the options, and renewable energy will develop biomass energy, and the 20% target in 2025 should be improved. Carbon taxes have been implemented in many countries for many years, including Germany, Denmark, Japan and the United Kingdom, which have levied energy taxes or carbon taxes. According to 2010 statistics, after the implementation of the carbon tax in the United Kingdom, approximately 3.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions were reduced every year. Taiwan has set a total greenhouse gas emission reduction of 20% in 2030 compared with 2005 and a reduction of 50% in 2050. Scholars including Li Yuanzhe, former president of Academia Sinica, have called for Taiwan to levy an energy tax or carbon tax to reduce the external impact caused by fossil fuel-related industries. Cost internalization. Yuan Shaoying, director of the Environmental Management Department of the Environmental Protection Agency, said that the Executive Yuan Sustainable Development Committee has asked the Ministry of Finance to propose a plan to levy a carbon tax or energy tax in 2020. It is understood that the Ministry of Finance’s plan is to promote energy taxes to replace oil and gas goods taxes, increase carbon taxes in an appropriate amount, and review the levy items stipulated in the goods tax regulations. In addition to the option of levying a carbon tax to reduce carbon emissions, Cai Hongde said that the government has formulated carbon reduction actions for six major sectors. In the energy sector, the 20% renewable energy in 2025 only counts wind energy and solar energy. If the biomass energy currently actively promoted Taking this into account, renewable energy can

EU to eliminate harmful substances in plastic materials by 2025

EU passes ban on single-use plastic products

In early 2018, the European Union proposed a ban on single-use plastic products. On December 20, the European Commission agreed to pass a ban on single-use plastic products. The ban targets the 10 most common plastic products on beaches and abandoned fishing gear. The new ban will bring dual environmental and economic benefits, and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.4 million tons and help consumers save 6.5 billion euros. The European Union states that 80% of marine debris is made of plastic materials, resulting in 90% of seabirds containing plastic products in their stomachs. Frans Timmermans, the First Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of sustainable development, expressed his strong support for the Executive Committee's decision. The ban can truly protect the earth's environment and people. The EU realizes that plastic waste is a very serious problem and shows great Having the courage to face it will make the EU a global leader in tackling the problem of marine plastic waste. Just as importantly, the resolution also promotes new circular business models and leads the economy towards sustainable development. The ban takes different measures for different product categories and is currently the most stringent law. The interim resolution reached this week still needs to be formally approved by the EU Parliament and Council. After approval, the new directive will be published in the EU's Official Journal and implemented by member states two years later. Source: Chemical Action (2018/12/21), PIDC compilation

To curb marine pollution, the European Parliament passed the plastic restriction bill with a high vote

In order to curb the increasing pollution of the oceans caused by plastic products, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly today (24th) to pass a plastic restriction order. All member states of the European Union will ban the use of a series of disposable plastic products such as plastic tableware. According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), when the European Parliament voted on the plastic restriction bill, there were 571 votes in favor and only 53 votes against. According to reports, items included in the prohibited list of this bill include plastic tableware, dinner plates, straws, stir sticks, balloon sticks, cotton swabs and other daily necessities. The bill also calls on EU food and beverage businesses to reduce the use of disposable plastic containers such as plastic cups and bottles. The bill also requires that each EU member state must reduce 251 TP3T by 2025 for other plastic products that "have no substitutes", such as burger boxes and sandwich packaging. The plastic restriction bill still needs to go through several procedures before it officially takes effect in EU countries. However, judging from the high vote passed by the European Parliament this time, it is expected that all subsequent procedures should be passed. The EU has stated externally that it hopes the plastic restriction order can take effect in all member states before 2021. Data source: Environmental Information Center (2018/10/26)

To avoid runaway climate change, the United Nations: Action must be taken by 2020

With 2018 set to become the fourth hottest year on record, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres warned today that the world must take action in the next two years to avoid the catastrophic consequences of runaway climate change. Antonio Guterres said in a speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York: "Climate change is a key issue of our time, and we are at a critical moment." He said: "If we do not change our approach before 2020, we will miss the opportunity to avoid The timing of runaway climate change will spell disaster for humanity and all the natural systems that support us. World leaders signed the Paris climate agreement in 2015, committing to a series of measures to limit global temperature rise to below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). ), and rise below 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (0.83 degrees Celsius) by the end of the century. However, recent research shows that the world may deviate from its original plan and may not be able to achieve its goals. Guterres called on politicians, businesses, scientists and the public to show stronger leadership to "break the deadlock" and put the world on a climate-friendly path. "Too many leaders refuse to listen, and too few act on the vision proposed by scientists," he said. In two weeks, world leaders will gather in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly. People sign a petition calling for France to legislate a ban on lost spot goods

Worse than straws, the biggest source of ocean plastic pollution is cigarette holders

Plastic-free "pineapple leaf" eco-friendly leather has become a trend in the fashion industry

London Half Marathon bans plastic bottled water and will replace it with edible water balloons
