The United States requires advance notification of certain types of products containing mercury.
The United States requires that imports of certain types of products containing mercury must be notified in advance. On August 6, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a regulation that will take effect on August 20 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Final rule for a significant new use rule for elemental mercury in flow meters, pressure gauges, and natural gas thermometers, except for products still in use as of September 11, 2009. According to requirements, those who wish to import, manufacture or process mercury must notify the Environmental Protection Agency at least 90 days in advance before starting these activities. The EPA can then evaluate the purpose of the notification and, if necessary, prohibit or restrict the above activities before they occur. This move is a measure by the Environmental Protection Agency to further control hazardous substances, and in some cases prohibits the use of hazardous substances such as mercury and lead contained in certain products. Many states in the United States have banned the sale of flow meters, pressure gauges, thermometers and other products containing mercury, including California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont. – Source: HKTDC
