The EU plans to include medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) in the RoHS control list by the end of 2022!

On May 20, 2022, the European Commission published an initiative on its official website regarding substances restricted under the RoHS Directive. The proposal would add tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) to the RoHS restricted substances list…

Estimated time for issuing directives

The adoption of this plan is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022. The final control requirements will be based on the final decision of the European Commission. Two new substances proposed for control

In March 2021, the EU RoHS Assessment Agency released the final assessment report for RoHS Investigation Project Pack 15, recommending that medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) be added to the control list:

MCCPs: The recommended control limit is 0.1 wt%
MCCPs: The recommended control limit is 0.1 wt%

About Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A)

Medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) (including linear or branched chlorinated paraffins with carbon chain lengths of C14-C17)

Toxicity: Including reproductive toxicity and aquatic toxicity. MCCPs are considered to meet the PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic) and vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative) characteristics of REACH regulations and were added to the SVHC candidate list in July 2021.
Function: Similar to SCCPs, these are flame-retardant plasticizers. They are commonly found in PVC, soft plastics, rubber materials, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and especially wire and cable. Alternatives to MCCPs, which are used as plasticizers and flame retardants, are already available on the market.
Environmental hazards: The disposal of discarded electrical and electronic products and the recycling of PVC materials pose unacceptable risks to human health and the environment. MCCPs in soil and water sediments can enter the food chain and cause secondary poisoning in organisms.

四溴雙酚 A (TBBP-A)

Toxicity: TBBP-A is being evaluated in the EU for its endocrine disrupting and PBT properties
Function: Used as a reactive flame retardant in electronic and electrical products
Environmental hazards: These are common pollutants that are frequently detected in the environment. Disposal and recycling of electrical and electronic products may pose unacceptable risks to workers and may also produce hazardous residues or degradation products that may be released uncontrolled into the environment.
